Baby (commodity) boom

#DailySignals - Your 2 minute preview of the future

The baby (commodity market) boom lies downstream from falling global fertility rates and changing family structures.

And it’s big booming business indeed. Already a 14 billion US dollar a year industry (with everyone from doctors and anesthesiologists and lawyers and phsycologists and social workers and assorted middle men to governments - and, occasionally even the women who’s *labour* is being sold, feeding off the supply chain) its projected to grow to 130 billion US dollar making machine over the next decade as demand for babies exceeds supply thereof (and appetite for self production).

What other industries have you seen grow up to fill the demand for families amidst falling fertility?

How comfortable are you with paying women to rent their bodies - and paying for babies in general? What new laws and norms do we need to consider to protect everyone’s rights to bodily (and self!) autonomy?

Is population growth (or decline) and the arbitrage thereof between wealth and poverty - a goal worth investing in?

Tell me your thoughts and concerns about the human and economic potential here.
