Today’s signal on how women in India are getting their bus fares comped by the government (nice) was a great excuse for me to bring out two of my favourire bug bears :
1) how we confuse our price (salary) with our value to humanity - in a rigged global economy with rules for thee but not for me - and somehow convince ourselves that we are worth 1000 x the day rate of an Indian lady labourer (LinkedIn trolls here who have been arguing with me, this one is for you - I’m Twitter strong, bring it on)
2) how we confuse spotting and treating symptoms with diagnosing and curing actual underline ailments. No amount of free bus passes is going to fix gender discrimination norms or the fact that women don’t earn enough for a day’s labour to cover bus fare… (shout out to Iain Montgomery from Label Sessions for sharing a banger of an article I’ll link to that reminded me of this today).
Anyway, over to you.
Aren’t free bus passes nice?
Isn’t gender discrimination naughty?
What other symptom solutions have you seen celebrated lately?
Do you really think you are worth your price?
Go on, give me your best shots!
