Considering today's public education construct was developed in Germany in the 1830s to churn out factory workers, what we need is a Renaissance.

Tricky one! My nieces experienced this in the UK system in addition to 4 plus hours of swimming training 6 days a week! I kind of made peace with it though when I realized there was no home work to be done at home. I mean the idea and value of homework is debatable in my opinion (for another day) but if the 9 hrs at school includes this isn’t it the same as home early but sit and do your homework anyway?

On the issue of free time I do believe in parents allotting time for free play away from devices and technology. This ‘bored’ time would encourage creativity. The same way it does in adults. But maybe modern parents give so much structure because they themselves are uncomfortable with unstructured time? Unstructured time leads to introspection about our lonely lives and many can’t deal… so let’s spare the children of this awful feeling (aka more cotton wool😂)

Add to the fact that anyone under 25 or even 30 has rarely experienced life offline. im not a parent, but once was young who was probably a very lonely only child with little parental supervision. Entertaining myself was nothing compared to having to feed , clothe and motivate myself. Children are resilient ,sometimes leaving them the fuck alone to fend for themselves says more about whats good for us.
