The breakdown of the rail system is having a large negative impact on our road infrastructure. Steel tracks are being removed (stolen), and trains are being vandalised and burnt. The freight goods are now being transported via trucks on the road. What follows this massive shift from rail to road is the steady and increased use and abuse of the roads, resulting in sustained damages, potholes and serious accidents. Not to mention the call to loot whenever one of these trucks breaks down.
Government increasing tolls and maybe even taxes to generate income to throw at these problems is like using a plaster to cover the wound of a limb amputation.
