The decline in educational achievement probably mimics the reluctance of workers to return to hard graft in the office. Both adults & children had a taste of an alternate lifestyle during the COVID lockdowns and they are less motivated, at least they are in the west. In Asian countries the norm is to study all hours available to get good grades, but I believe that South Korea has a high suicide rate as adolescents suffer anxiety due to the pressure to succeed.
Personally, I learnt very little from most of my teachers & lecturers; I would take notes and then find a book I could understand in order to complete the course work. Being interested in a subject really requires practical uses that inspire students to do something. One example that comes to mind is when I wanted to make a model hot air balloon. I needed the math for the volume of a sphere, and physics to calculate the difference in density of hot & cold air. Sadly, this wasn't something I did in class but it should have been. Students need that kind of inspiration NOT dry, abstract teaching.
