One in three homes in Japan will be vacant by 2040.

What does that say about our foresight and priorities?

About the value of babies? Degrowth in practice?

About protecting the memory of the past vs being pragmatic about the future?

How about the future of nation states and our arbitrary boundaries?

Or about inequality on a global spacial scale? (Given the housing crisis in all sorts of other places) - and about our revealed preference for the new over the old (and the old over the new) ?

Can tourism (see linked source) fix this? Or does it turn (what’s left of) neighbourhoods into a zoo?

That sort of signal makes me melancholy.

And opens all sorts of questions.
