Polyamornomics

#DailySignals -Your 2 minute preview of the future
2

More spicy signals!

Today I look at how polyamory is trending in the WEIRD world - from figuratively polyamourous geopolitics through to the more literal sort, it’s everywhere.

But the signal I spotted for you today, which focuses on a married couple who brought in a third parter to live with them, claiming it was the “only way” they could afford to buy a house.

Logic aside, the idea that double income famously units are no longer enough to fund a “decent” Western middle class lifestyle (much like single income households went the way of the dinosaur in the 21st century - few, few women have a *choice* about working in formal employment now!) is an interesting and not altogether inaccurate idea - in the age of Degrowth and MMT inflation.

Could family financial pressure not just incentivise polyamorous situationships of neccecity but also point towards other multi-adult home structures, friend pods, inter generational “sandwich” homes (where granny and gramps and Aunty move back in) ?

And what does the normalisation of previously taboo polyamory in the literal sense say about shifting social norms and taboos - which are, admittedly, always in flux - and our desire to be seen and loved?

Quantity & quality trade offs abound.
